October Comes Gently

"Every good and perfect gift is from above." — James 1:17

There is something about October at the coast that makes me want to linger.

The heat loosens its grip. The humidity begins to lift. A breeze comes across the water, and the white foam curls along the edge of the tide. Even the light seems different. There is just enough change in the air to remind us that a new season has arrived.

October feels like a little pause.

Summer has slipped away, but the rush of Thanksgiving and Christmas has not yet begun. For a few weeks, there is room to notice things.

And lately, I have been noticing generosity.

Kindness has come from places I expected and places I didn't. A thoughtful word. Someone offering to help. A gift freely given. A person showing up at just the right time. None of these things may seem extraordinary by themselves, but together they have reminded me of something I already knew and sometimes forget:

God makes a way.

Not always the way I would have planned. Not necessarily on my timetable. And very often, He makes that way through other people.

Maybe that is one of October's gifts—the quiet space to recognize what has already been placed in our path.

Like the tide, blessings come and go in different forms. Some arrive with great importance. Others barely make a sound.

But they come.

So before the calendars fill and the holidays begin, I want to stand still for a moment and be grateful—for cooler breezes, white foam on the water, unexpected kindness, generous hearts, and a God who continues to make a way.

Sometimes abundance isn't having everything we want.
Sometimes it is suddenly realizing how much we have already been given.
