Changing Traditions

You are LovedYou are Loved Let all that you do be done in love. I Corinthians 16:14 ESV

Rudyard Kipling said, “God could not be everywhere so he made Mothers”.  Well we know that God is everywhere but I understand his sentiment in placing importance on Mothers.

Oh, the memories of yesteryear. When I grew up and then when I was raising my own family we always celebrated the holidays together with our family, which was composed of multiple generations.  I miss the Mother's Day cookouts, the strawberry shortcake for dessert, Mother  looking  pretty as a daisy in a new summer dress for the occasion. Followed by Father’s Day and another barbecue with family united.  Fourth of July crab picking and watermelon. We celebrated everything. Playing badminton in the back yard after lunch, sitting in lawn chairs outdoors looking at the perfectly tended beds of azaleas and talking with the family. We celebrated with family at Easter Buffets after church. Family gathered on birthdays. There was always a cake. Receiving loving messages on anniversaries. The joy of weddings, which expanded our family, grandchildren arriving and losses and sad goodbyes of the elders. It is all a part of the weave that knits a family together. I miss my Mother on this upcoming Mother's Day. Her address is Heaven now.

So as this Mother's Day approaches, and especially for those of us with a missing place in our hearts or at our table due to distance, it is my hope that we remember the good times and reminisce a bit. I’ll pray for new memories to come and try to find my way in a changing world where these sweet traditions of family gathering are fading. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. Colossians 3:14 ESV
