Easter LilyEaster Lily Praise be to the God and Father of Our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

-1 Peter 1:3 NIV

Easter is the commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus, but what is the significance of the Easter Lily? Many traditions are centered around Easter with church services, family gatherings and feasts, the usual egg hunts, baskets and chocolate bunnies. But one flower has marked Easter and that is the white Easter Lily. It represents purity, hope and life. But where did that originate from? Lilies have been said to have grown where drops of Jesus’ sweat fell to the ground in the final hours of his life as he was about to be crucified. They were also found growing in the Garden of Gethsemane after the crucifixion and were referred to as the “ white-robed apostles of hope”. I will now look at the beautiful, fragrant Easter Lily in a new way.

Purity, Hope and Life. We couldn’t ask for more, could we? To be pure is a good thing to strive for. “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”Psalm 51:10 NIV.  Hope is something that we all need to hang on to. No matter what our situation is, we can all use a double-dose of hope. In Jeremiah 29:11, we learn that “there are plans to give us hope and a future”. How comforting!  And in John 3:16, we are told that “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” Easter is a time that we can reaffirm our faith, living a pure, hopeful life that the promises of the Easter message brings us, symbolized by the beautiful flower of the Easter Lily.
