Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! Matthew 7:7-12
I was thrown off balance this week while talking to my grandson. He’s 4 years old. He spent the night with us and I said let’s go to church in the morning. With great frustration he said, “No thanks. I have been to church and I haven’t seen God yet…not once”!! I paused, secretly praying to God for some words of wisdom that would be profound to a 4 year old ears and heart. I stammered in the way a grandmother shouldn’t….we should have all the answers right!!! Thinking about it days later, and sharing my story with my daughter, we decided to use the wind and air as our inspiration to say we know it exists, even if we can’t see it and that is how it is with God too. I tried that theory on him and he seemed to understand better. We can’t see the wind but we can feel it and we can see it when the flag waves. This boy is smart and can’t be convinced easily. I will have to figure out how to make God into a superhero (which He is!!) and see if we can’t have a breakthrough.
How many people feel the same way as my grandson does? Does God really exist? I can’t see Him. How can I believe in something if I can’t see it? Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed”. John 20:29. Doubt comes fleeting in at times when we feel despair with no answer on the horizon. When we feel helpless or alone. Or when we ask for guidance and instead we receive silence. But be assured God is real and He does exist. These are the times to deepen the faith when doubt overrides. “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him”. Hebrews 11:6
Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:12-13
